Ride report by Doug H
On a chilly, damp Saturday morning, Mark, Andy, Chris and Doug met at PC. We had every type of clothing imaginable, as rain was very much in the offing and it was going to be a long one.
We headed south towards Plumstead, picking up Ian and Clive on the way, then picking up Neil at Edgefield before continuing to Briston, Nethergate and Hindolveston. With the rain arriving, we stopped briefly to put on our rain jackets before heading off through Wood Norton and Little Ryburgh, skirting below Fakenham. Here, we had to divert around a road accident, following directions from the police officers.
We then headed north through Cranmer, Waterden and New Holkham, eventually stopping for lunch at Holkham Hall.
We settled down for lunch and were joined by Graham, which was lovely. We ate well, some more than others, and discussed the usual multitude of topics, including flags. The main talking point was that three of the Wheelers share a birthday, meaning that the next couple of weeks should bring some bonus cakes!

With lunch finished, Chris said his goodbyes and headed off for a fast second leg. The rest of us settled into a nice pace, stopping in Wells for a group photo by the quayside before heading up the hill to Warham, where Graham peeled off to take his route home.

We then enjoyed a lovely ride back, with a slight tailwind, through Binham, Sharrington and Thornage. Clive headed back towards Blakeney, so we wished him a lovely Christmas and said we’d see him in the New Year.
Then it was the home straight, with Mark ramping up the pace as we approached the Hunworth Hill climb. He timed it perfectly and led the procession to the top, taking first place.
We then said goodbye to Andy and Neil, who headed home, while Ian, Mark and Doug continued towards Baconsthorpe. Once again, Mark put on the afterburners and was first to the top of the antenna/wind turbine climb.
Ian then made his way back to Kelling, Doug headed off to Cromer and Mark continued towards PC.
All in all, this was a lovely ride and, thankfully, not nearly as wet as expected. A great day out!
PC to PC was 59.6 miles at an average 14.6 mph (15.0 Out, 13.9 Back)
