Now who would have thought that The Red Lion Café would revert to Winter Opening Hours – well clearly Malcolm didn’t so had to switch to Plan B (on arrival at the Café) and so lead the Wheelers to a riverside lunchtime destination!
7 Wheelers were joined by a guest rider today, Stephen on his Summer road bike – Malcolm duly took note and hoped that his planned route wouldn’t be too mucky – after all we do want to see Stephen again! Wisely Stephen came dressed for the cold north westerly unlike 2 of the Wheelers who clearly had decided to tough it out in shorts!
The route out took us via Itteringham, Oulton Street and Oulton to the Heydon Park Estate after which it was the back lanes to Cawston, where Jane left us, and on to Eastgate and Buxton taking advantage of the tailwind. “Police Slow” signs as we entered Buxton were welcome as there was a hefty fire hose across the road helping to deal with a refuse lorry fire.
Further assisted by the tailwind we sped (!?) into Coltishall and found a very sunny and sheltered spot right next to The River Bure and enjoyed a great lunch before setting off for Great and Little Hautbois not yet experiencing the inevitable headwind. After Badersfield, Skeyton and Tuttington we pedalled the long haul up to Banningham where Malcolm split from the group and headed off to Colby and home. The remaining half dozen went into the headwind towards Ingworth and then Thurgarton, Bessingham, Gresham and back to PC, the group shedding members on the way as they went their own routes homewards.
Not bad at all conditions just a bit on the breezy side. Bikes not too mucky. Many thanks to all for the company and we are looking forward to Stephen joining us again soon.
