25m TT results 9/5/17

Tuesday evening continued the very cool weather, but the wind started to drop as the evening progressed. A good warm up prior to racing is needed in such conditions.

The evening saw a re-match between NNW’s Charlie Nurse and Team Skipper’s Joe Skipper and this time the tables were turned. Local knowledge may have helped Charlie with pacing, as he returned fairly fresh and beat Joe by 1 minute 5 seconds.

The standout ride however was from Kim Morrison of Racing Hub, who set a new Female Course Record of 57m54s, and that on a far from good night for racing.

The next best effort was by John Morgan, clearly benefitting from his trip to Majorca with Tri Harman, enabling him to set a new personal best time early in the season. A sub 60 minute time should be possible on a warmer night later in the season.

10m TT results B10/5R 2nd May 2017

If a week in politics is a long time, it certainly was in Time Trialling, on the 2nd May.

The weather was only marginally better, with a sharp N.E. wind, but the turnout was 4 times better than the last 2 races. 13 of the 24 racers were guests and 4 were 2nd claim members.

It took a professional Triathlete, Joe Skipper of Team Skipper to beat our top rider Charlie Nurse into 2nd place, but Charlie still holds the most recent fastest time of 20m30s. The course record of old is 20m07s by the late Zak Carr.

Two other European Triathletes did really well, Kim Morrison of Race MCB setting a new female course record of 22m15s and Dave Chesterman of UEA CC taking 3rd place among the men with 22m05s.

Unfortunately, Mike Padfield crashed whilst road racing in the Lotus League, breaking his bike, injuring his leg and picking up bad road rash. We wish Mike a speedy recovery and return to racing.

Next Tuesday is the first 25 mile TT of the season, starting at the Letheringsett layby just outside Holt at 6 45 pm

15m TT results 26/4/17

It wasn’t the rain holding off or the new roundabout on the Holt bypass that was the topic of conversation for the 6 brave souls who road the first 15 mile TT of the season. The 4 C weather plus northerly wind chill which had the riders shivering and shaking after the race. Needless to say, nobody got under 39 minutes and with so many riders away, Nigel Walsh was best with a time of 39m19s. Kudos goes to Trini Middleton on getting under 58 mins on her first 15 mile TT. It is a difficult distance to pace when the body is  used to a diet of 10 miles.

18.5m Hilly TT results – 20/4/17

On what turned out to be a pleasant April evening, it was disappointing that only 6 riders raced this sporting course. The marshals and organizers out-numbered the riders.

However they were treated to Charlie Nurse setting a new course record and all bar one rider getting under 53 minutes. Those were very good early season times, considering the route includes a two mile drag uphill from Weybourne to Holt and an 18% ramp passed Weybourne Station.

Thursford 10m TT results 11/4/17

A great turnout of 28 riders populated the layby at Thursford last night for the second Thursford-Fakenham 10m TT of the season.  Conditions were better than the previous week with good visibility, some warmth and a tailwind home.

As so often the case the tailwind on the way back was dropping as the evening progressed but still helped to some degree and times were generally faster than the week before.  Charlie Nurse (North Norfolk Wheelers) took the honours with 21.17, followed by Matt Ratcliffe (Iceni Velo) 21.39 and Chris Skinner (CS Velosport) 22.23.  Fastest lady was Andrea Eugster (all the way from Norway) in 26.55.  In the 60+ age group John Hayward and Guy Thorold improved significantly on their previous times.

It was good to see local team East Coast Riders out in force, putting out some good times on their road bikes.  They along with a North Norfolk Wheeler are competing at the Fakenham Criterium on Easter Sunday so try and support this event and cheer them on if you can.

A reminder that entries are still open during the next month for the North Norfolk Wheelers 100m TT on 20th May.  It should be a good event that includes a number of ‘first timers’, amateurs and professional triathletes.  For details and entries see here https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/race-details/15048

Just a quick note on Bruce Williams.  He will be leaving club marshalling duties soon and I’m sure more words will be written in due course.  After many years of marshalling involving sign distribution, loitering on roundabouts, encouraging riders, and dealing with angry motorists he is hanging up his hi-vis for a better life.  He has always been there to ‘bollock’ riders who take the odd risk, (in a friendly way!), discuss performances and regale stories from TTs past.  His big personality will be sorely missed at the club and open events.

Horsford 10m TT results 2/4/17

A nice sunny afternoon greeted the 27 riders on the only run out on this course of the year (VC Norwich run a few more later in the year).  With last years’ outing on the course curtailed by the curse of the TTLs (*temporary traffic lights) it was good that a) the road was open and b) we didnt have to ride in winter gear.

The first club TT of the year proved good for a number of riders who got course PBs indicating they are ‘up for it’ this season.  Charlie was on song again (even with a bit of hayfever) and took the usual honors with Simon Warren (Pedal Revolution) and Matt Ratcliffe (Iceni Velo) not too far behind.  Best on handicap also with a PB was Mike Padfield. Fastest lady was Christine Cooke of Godric.

It was good to see club member Paul Bailey and club secretary David Carrier giving a helping hand.  Thanks to the marshals, starters and timekeepers for making the event happen.

On the way home the course was blocked with a three car pile up (no-one seriously hurt) which would have stopped the race if it had happened an hour or so earlier.

Due to TTLs near Holt (now just removed) tomorrows race will be at Thursford.

EDCA Winner Charlie Nurse

The East District Cycling Association (EDCA) prize-giving awards ceremony for the 2016 season were held at Carbrooke village hall in late January.
North Norfolk Wheeler Charlie won awards for winning the EDCA ‘15’ and ‘25’ championships in 2016 and also included some awards for handicap improvement on standard.  Unfortunately for Charlie, he did not enter the EDCA ‘10’ or ‘50’ championships or he might have made it a clean sweep !  Charlie is getting his medals from Stewart Smith who is the CTT National Secretary for Competitions and Development.  He also has the fastest 15 mile time on record in the EDCA handbook with a 29:30.
