Club Run to The Conservatory at Aylsham 26 July 2017

Alan’s reflections

Seven trusty stalwarts met at Pretty Corner for the ride to The Conservatory at Aylsham.

We set out into a healthy head wind via Gresham, Felbrigg Park, South Cromer, Northrepps, Southrepps and Lower Street. Here we picked up a stray (David C) sitting at X roads having a drink. Heading south to Bradfield, North Walsham, Skeyton, Coltishall and Little Hautbois, then looping round to Hainford, Stratton Strawless and Buxton to a well earned lunch at Aylsham.

Here we were treated to a nice jug of water to quench our thirst while waiting for our orders. Unfortunately the initial jug was warm not cold as intended but was soon rectified with many apologies.

Having been fully fed we proceeded to head back to Pretty Corner via Able Heath, Blickling, then the usual return leg through Itteringham, having said goodbye to Trevor and John who headed home in a westerly direction.

Luckily the promised rain held off until ride completed.

Many thanks to Alan for being leader and navigator for the day. Sorry I couldn’t join you – had to see a man about a dog!

TT results Thursford-Fakenham 10 25/7/17

A change from the Aylmerton 15 to a Thursford 10 due to traffic lights was made to ensure we didnt miss another evening of time-trialling.  This didnt stop a reasonable turnout from riding.  The conditions were very good, with not much wind and not too hot.  Mike Padfield was fastest with a CPB by 21 seconds as he gets ever closer to a 21 on the club 10 courses. Second was Chris Skinner who was ‘allowed out to play’ and showed he still had good form.  Third was Perry (sorry didnt get first name)!  There were good rides (seasons bests) by John Morgan and Nigel Walsh.  Sarah Jay and Katie Middleton both got personal bests.  Thanks to the riders, timekeepers and marshalls as always.

Back to Pretty Corner next week for the Zak Carr trophy 10m TT.

Aylmerton Hill, West Runton Hill Climb 20/7/17

A select group of club members and two guests took on the only categorised Hill Climb in Norfolk.  Even the organiser nearly forgot to turn up!  One of the best young riders in the district the Cat 1 rider Tommy Power (Strada Sport) got within 2.5 seconds of the course record set in 2009 by Will Dorsett.  With time on his side he could do it in the next few year.  Mike Padfield got second with a PB and another young rider Thomas Pask came third.

Club Run to The Globe Inn at Wells next the Sea 19 July 2017

Reflections by Andrew

After a night of thunderstorms and heavy rain we were not too sure what the roads would be like.

Three of us departed for The Globe at Wells. Although the roads were mainly dry, on some occasions it was like hopscotch weaving around the gravels. We set out through Baconsthorpe thence to Holt and on to Hunworth. A helpful easterly wind pushing us forward.

On to Stody and Sharrington, over the 149 to Bale and to Walsingham via Bale and Hindringham. We chose the Bunker Hill route out of Walsingham and then elected to extend the ride through Holkham Hall before turning into the wind for the two miles to Wells.

An excellent lunch at the Globe before the return journey largely into an easterly wind. Through Warham, Binham and Langham before the usual return through High Kelling and Lower Bodham.

Alan, Andrew and Malcolm

PC to PC 47 miles at about 15 mph. Tired legs at the end.

Note from Wed Club Runs Captain

Thank you to Andrew who again used his extensive knowledge of the Norfolk lanes to provide an excellent route

10m TT results 18/7/17

21 riders from 6 clubs enjoyed a fine evening of racing.  A brisk easterly wind made the outward leg fast and the return a bit of a struggle. Most people were slightly down on recent times and therefore course personal bests by Louise Marsden and Sarah Jay were impressive.  Aiden Bond just got under 22 minutes followed by Mike Padfield and David Spauls. Nigel Walsh had his best ride of the season after a break in racing and it was good to see John Hayward racing again after his crash.  Thanks to the riders, marshalls, timekeepers and the police for security marking bikes after the race.

Club Run to The Goat at Skeyton 12 July 2017

We waited a while but with no more appearances the faithful four set off for Trevor’s ride to The Goat.

We knew that this would be a reasonably fast ride because there was a healthy tail wind; and so it proved as we sped off downhill towards Bessingham. We were all set to continue on through the wandering herd in Hanworth but were halted when one of the group punctured a short distance from the first cattle grid. The roadside repair didn’t seem to please a certain Mr Angry in his 4×4!

Maybe the stop gave the leader too much time to think and he chose to retrace our route and then on to Aldborough rather than engage in a little impromptu cattle rustling. At Erpingham we took a slightly different path to the A140 via School Road.

We reached our destination after nearly 25 miles, passing through Suffield, Felmingham, Tuttington, Westwick, Swanton Abbott, Badersfield – well Trevor needed an extra loop to make up the mileage!

We were met by David C at the pub and we all enjoyed great service and food before Trevor headed off home and left the forlorn four to battle the headwind back up through Tuttington to Banningham to Colby where Malcolm said goodbye and a trio of Wheelers pedalled in the direction of Erpingham and then back to Pretty Corner on familiar roads.

Thanks to Travor for leading the ride.

25m Holt Fakenham TT results 4/7/17

On a warm summers evening on the Norfolk Coast 9 riders turned up to tackle the rolling 25m TT course from Holt to Fakenham and back.  A slight tail wind helped on the way out and hindered slightly on the return, but overall conditions were good for time trialling.  Fastest was Mike Padfield (58.31) who had a slow puncture 1.5 miles from the finish but still managed a personal best by 58 seconds.  Second was seasoned triathlete John Morgan (1:01.57) who was in good form following the Outlaw triathlon the weekend before.  Third was a guest rider Miles Higby (1:02:00) who was on holiday in the area.

With 14 time trials left on the calendar including a hill climb, 10m, 18.5m hilly and 25m TTs, the North Norfolk Wheelers welcomes riders of all abilities from all clubs to their events.
