Club Ride to Coast Café, Trimingham

Ride report by Neil Mc

Five Wheelers met at PC on a beautiful autumn morning with sunshine and very light breeze, conditions couldn’t have been better.

The ride set off via East Beckham to collect Neil and Doug at Gresham church and the peloton was complete. The outbound route went via North Barningham, Barningham Winter, Matlaske, Calthorpe and Erpingham to cross the A140 at High Noon Road. We carried on past Colby school and took the back road round Felmingham to cross the Cromer road at Antingham taking the nifty shortcut round the back of the church and its companion ruin.

From Antingham it was a short ride through Bradfield and Trunch to the coast at Mundesley via the road past the old sanatorium. We passed through the outskirts of Mundesley and looped round through Gimingham. With the cafe within sniffing distance, disaster struck and Mark was visited by a puncture which turned out to be caused by a thorn. He very capably changed the inner tube with no assistance from the rest of the peloton who were very busy taking the mickey rather than being helpful. Chris decided to ride on to grab an early cup of tea and ride home faster instead of waiting and as it turned out we never saw him again.

Mark expertly fixed the puncture and it was only a short further ride to the Coast Cafe, Trimingham. This is a cafe within a caravan holiday park and has to be the cheapest cafe we visit by miles. The food quality is very good, service is fast and they are very friendly – what is not to like? (apart from the mysterious reluctance to hand over any teaspoons – ????)

Graham was already at the Cafe waiting for us having ridden independently from Cromer and we all had the usual wide-ranging chat including various cycling holidays and winter training and then participated in a very odd gamified technique using a dice to select next month’s ride destinations and cafes. (the Author having missed several rides was very confused about the rules! Seemed to work though?)

It soon came time to leave and it had turned rather chillier as some clouds had appeared to hide the sun. Fortunately it was more sheltered inland and we soon warmed up. The return route went via Gimingham, Southrepps, across the Cromer road at Thorpe Market and then across the A140 toward Hanworth where Doug turned off for Metton and then Cromer and home.

The remaining group rode on through Hanworth, Aldborough, Wickmere and Little Barningham where Neil and Andy turned off for Corpusty and home. The remaining three amigos carried on to Baconsthorpe where Ray turned to Hempstead, Holt and home. The final two carried on to Rectory road where Ian turned for High Kelling and home leaving Mark as the sole remaining Wheeler to ride on to PC and home.

A very nice day’s riding in great conditions for the time of year.

PC to PC was 45.0 miles at an average 14.8 mph (14.9 Out, 14.8 Back)
Riders: Andy S, Neil M, Chris S, Ray T, Ian A, Mark M, Doug H, Graham A at café.
